Wingsuit flying traces its origins back to the early 20th century. An invention from 1917, envisioned by a tailor named Franz Reichelt, it somewhat resembled a present-day wingsuit. It was a combination of a wing and a parachute. Reichelt had such faith in his invention that he tested it personally by jumping from the Eiffel Tower and he failed paying with his death. The first commercial wingsuit was developed in 1999 by Jari Kuosman and Robert Pecnik. Wingsuit flying can be associated with the practice of skydiving as well as with the arguably more thrilling practice of BASE jumping.
