Canyoning in Austria - Gaisalmklamm, Achensee, Tirol

15. 12. 2020

Canyoning in the Gaisalmklamm / Gaisalmbach on the west side of the Achensee, Tirol, Austria. After a long and, in parts, difficult ascent follows a tricky descent into the canyon. Lots of high rappels, with arduous hiking stretches in between. Quite a few anchors have (probably) disappeared due to the crumbly nature of the limestone, so precarious down-climbing is necessary every now and then. After exiting the Gaisalm bach you find the Gaisalm on the left, where a ferry can take you back to the north of the Achensee where your car will be parked. If there is no ferry, you can take the Mariensteig which will take about an hour. All in all, quite a beautiful canyon with nice abseils (3h), but you have to ask yourself if the long way up (3h), and the long way back (1h) are worth it. Approach: Park at "Wanderparkplatz Achenkirch" and follow the signs to Kogelalm (50min). At the Kogelalm follow the ridgeline up, there is a vague path to be found. Once you reach the flatter area seen on the video (roughly 1600 meters of elevation), start traversing to the south. Stay roughly on this elevation and you can find a small "side canyon" which lets you into the Gaisalm klamm. Alternatively, ascend another 200m and make your way in from the top.
