Canyoning in Austria - Pitzbach & Hühnerbach, Achensee, Tirol

15. 12. 2020

Canyoning in the Pitzbach and the following Hühnerbach to the North of the Achensee in Tirol, Austria. Both canyons offer beautiful views in occasionally very narrow passages, along with very nice jumps, slides, and in the case of Pitzbach, abseils. Be careful though, with heavy rainfall the depths of the pools can change significantly, rendering some jumps unsafe. With higher water levels parts of these canyons can also quickly become extremely dangerous. Approach: Park at 47°34'56.3"N 11°37'02.4"E and take the gravel road. After about 20 min the road branches, the right leading to the entry of the Hühnerbach (and exit of the Pitzbach), the left leading up to the Pitzbach. After another roughly 10 min the road branches once more, and here you take a right and arrive at the entry. Max Abseil: 27m (33m if you take the right-side anchor, which is less spectacular). After the last jump in the Hühnerbach (see video), the canyon opens up more. Either risk the old exit (now ropeless) on the right side, or continue on for another 10 min until another clear, and easier, exit leads up through the forest. Due to strict regulations on German Canyoning, try to always remain on the right (Austrian) side of the Hühnerbach!
