Bhote Koshi, canyon & landslide - white water kayaking Nepal

11. 9. 2019

End of season and most people had flown home. The landslide rapid had been on my agenda all season but I could never get a team to drop in. The landslide was formed in 2014 when the whole mountain subsided crushing an entire village and stopping the river from flowing for over 12 hours. Left now is a 1km section of class 5 carved through the debris.
I dropped in, alone, carefully planning my route down and navigating the dangerous obstacles. At the bottom I took out unscathed but with the strangest feeling that this is not a place people are supposed to be. I believe this to be only a second decent and I’m sure not many people will venture into that eerie place anytime soon.
Gopro video shows some of the rapids from Chaku to the landslide. About 90% of this section will soon be gone! With a hydro being constructed at the put in, the water will be divert away, leaving the river dry for all but in the monsoon season. Both of the 2 preexisting dams where devastated in past monsoons! Some also say that the landslide was caused by the valleys damming and road blasting! Having experienced the power of the river first hand, and seen the destruction left when we tamper with natures flow, I know for sure, this is not a river that wants to be stopped!
