Cave Diving Exploration Bahamas Crystal Cave of Abaco

15. 8. 2019

Veronica Llaneza, Brian Kakuk and Ramon Llaneza in cave exploration. Filmed by Ramon Llaneza. The Bahamas Underwater Caves are the most beautiful, enigmatic and intricately decorated underwater caves on earth. These underwater caves with astounding labyrinths contain many massive crystal columns, multi color delicate and extremely fragile crystal formations of every imaginable shape. These calcite crystal (speleothem) formations date to over 350,000 years old with thousands of years of geological information. When sea level were lower during glacier periods (4 times in the last 350,000 years), these caves were dry and the crystals formed by dripping water and then re-submerged again 4 different geological times.
Over hundreds of thousands of years, red iron Saharan dust has blow across the Atlantic Ocean and settled into these caves and caught up in the crystal formations giving the incredible range of colors. These formations tell us a lot about ancient global climate and fluctuations in sea levels during glacial and interglacial periods. They are a time capsule. The spectacular and unique earth geological history of thousands of years of creation has been kept in these underwater caves in perpetual darkness waiting to be discovering by mankind.
